My career has been multi-faceted, including roles coaching, serving, advocating, advising, leading, and inspiring before launching J. H. McLaughlin & Co. Consequently, I’m able to bring to bear deep, applied knowledge and experience across multiple disciplines. I’m not a standard management consultant.

I recognize patterns, have an intuitive sense of time and distance, and can forecast trends and articulate solutions before they’re fully formed. I’m able to make the abstruse understandable. I like to organize and build things. I like a good story and will tell you one if you ask. I have a genuine interest in people and the lives they’ve lived. I like to find the truth early.

More About Jamie

Jamie McLaughlin has over 20 years of experience in both senior operating roles and client-facing roles in the family office and ultra high net worth industry and a history of building organizations across a spectrum of business models and platforms including bank, trust company, RIA, and broker-dealer; each operating in different markets and wealth segments. He has also developed an extensive professional network of firms and families across the country that he can call on for complementary capabilities to serve his clients.

Prior to founding J. H. McLaughlin & Co., Inc. in 2010, he was CEO of Geller Family Office Services, the New York-based MFO. Previously, he was a partner at Convergent Wealth Advisors for five years where he built the firm’s New York office and at Mellon for ten years where he was the regional president of Mellon Private Wealth Management’s New York region. He started in the wealth management industry as a financial advisor in the Private Client Group at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., Inc.

He has been an active industry contributor frequently serving as a conference chair, panelist, and speaker as well as writing extensively on industry themes and trends as an essayist and blogger (see - In the News).

He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) www.afb.org

and chairs the AFB’s investment committee. He is a member of the Subscribers Advisory Committee for PURE www.pureinsurance.com, a policyholder-owned property and casualty insurance company. He serves on the Advisory Committee of Addepar, Inc. www.addepar.com a wealth management technology company and on the Advisory Board of Sonen Capital www.sonencapital.com a social and environmental impact investment firm. He was recently President of the Lafayette College Alumni Association and currently serves on the Town of Darien’s Board of Finance.

From 1981 to 1991 Mr. McLaughlin served in both the House and Senate of the Connecticut General Assembly. In 1985, the Hartford Courant named him one of Connecticut’s “10 Best Legislators.”

Immediately following his college graduation, Mr. McLaughlin served as the Head Soccer Coach and an Assistant to the Athletic Director at Lafayette College, his alma mater. At the time, he was the youngest head coach of a Division I sport in America.

Mr. McLaughlin received his Bachelor’s degree in History from Lafayette and his Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School.

He and his wife, Julie (Hock), and son, Austin, reside in Darien, CT.

Initial Collaboration Discussion

An open dialogue quickly bubbles up issues that present a discussion matrix around unmet opportunities and challenges. You get some immediate feedback and, importantly, a sense of the fit between your firm and J. H. McLaughlin & Co.

Scope of Project (SOP) Agreement

We’ll meet with a client, assess their needs and requirements, and deliver a Scope of Project (SOP) as a working draft of a potential engagement.

 

The SOP includes a combination of discovery and analysis on which both consultant and client will collaborate and contemplates opportunities, challenges, and expected outcomes over a specific timeline. We work closely with you to think through and assess various options and scenarios, as well as help to frame key decisions.

Engagement Agreement

The SOP is rationalized by a series of discussions with the client and becomes both a de facto roadmap for the project and the basis of an engagement agreement. Our agreements are both project-related targeting specific initiatives or retainer-based.
