Serving Those Who Serve Wealth J. H. McLaughlin & Co. is a management consulting business focusing on strategy and practice management for wealth management and investment advisory firms, private banks, single and multi-family offices.

The wealth management industry is at a crossroads — extremely challenging business economics leave most firms undercapitalized, under-resourced, and understaffed to meet the demands of families of greater wealth and complexity. At the same time, families evidence a clear preference for highly customized advice and solutions delivered in an objective, conflict-free manner.

While client demand has shifted, few firms have capitalized on this market opportunity. This shift holds profound challenges for both the traditional private banking model as well as the boutiques as few examples of successful implementation exist in either model. This “tension” between firm-level profitability and delivering on the promise of a truly differentiated client experience is at the heart of the challenges facing the industry.

Helping wealth management executives capitalize on this opportunity and deliver on client expectations is J. H. McLaughlin & Co.'s forte.

Why J. H. McLaughlin & Co.?:

  • strategy development
  • operational efficiency and profitability
  • sales and growth strategies
  • staff design and talent development
  • executive management coaching

About Jamie

My career has been multi-faceted, including roles coaching, serving, advocating, advising, leading, and inspiring before launching J. H. McLaughlin & Co. Consequently, I’m able to bring to bear deep, applied knowledge and experience across multiple disciplines. I’m not a standard management consultant.

I recognize patterns, have an intuitive sense of time and distance, and can forecast trends and articulate solutions before they’re fully formed. I’m able to make the abstruse understandable. I like to organize and build things. I like a good story and will tell you one if you ask. I have a genuine interest in people and the lives they’ve lived. I like to find the truth early.

Strategy / Practice Management

Defining strategic objectives is only a starting point; to execute most effectively firms need to be able to measure absolute and relative progress toward objectives that are measurable.

Our solutions are highly customized and tailored to meet a clearly identified need or gap. Our strategy focus assists firms to sort out what they must do to achieve their objectives and, critically, what they won’t do.

Our practice management counsel takes clients from strategy to implementation where the focus is on operationalizing strategic objectives into execution; assigning ownership and accountability and getting things done.

We have strategic relationships with the following:

Fitzgerald Analytics, Inc. supports us in building and designing data algorithms for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and related metrics.

Millbrook Partners works closely with us in assessing talent, organizational design and realignments, and then leads any subsequent recruiting initiatives. Read More

Winslow Capital Group, LLC supports us with investment platform design, information technology, and systems integration. Read More

Our Process

We view our role as being a sounding board and advisor to you in the spirit of a partnership.

Initial Collaboration Discussion

An open dialogue quickly bubbles up issues that present a discussion matrix around unmet opportunities and challenges. You get some immediate feedback and, importantly, a sense of the fit between your firm and J. H. McLaughlin & Co.

Scope of Project (SOP) Agreement

We’ll meet with a client, assess their needs and requirements, and deliver a Scope of Project (SOP) as a working draft of a potential engagement.

The SOP includes a combination of discovery and analysis on which both consultant and client will collaborate and contemplates opportunities, challenges, and expected outcomes over a specific timeline. We work closely with you to think through and assess various options and scenarios, as well as help to frame key decisions.

Engagement Agreement

The SOP is rationalized by a series of discussions with the client and becomes both a de facto roadmap for the project and the basis of an engagement agreement. Our agreements are both project-related targeting specific initiatives or retainer-based.
